Helldivers Soft Goods, Props, and Assembly
The printed armor is done. Now sort out the base uniform, the cape, and everything that holds the build together for a full convention day.
Base Uniform
- Top and pants: Olive green or khaki military fatigue top and pants. Real military surplus BDUs are the right call: cheap, durable, correct weight and drape. Search “olive BDU set” on military surplus sites.
- Alternatively: A black BDU base works for darker armor sets (B-24 Enforcer, etc.).
- Fit: Slightly baggy is correct. This is military utility clothing, not tactical spandex.
Weather the uniform to match your armor. Diluted brown paint stippled onto elbows, knees, and hem lines pulls the fabric into the same battle-worn register as the printed pieces.
Boots and Gloves
- Boots: Chunky military-style boots in black or brown. Combat boots from military surplus are ideal and cheap.
- Gloves: Dark brown or black tactical gloves with minimal modern branding.
The Cape
Option 1: Source and modify pre-made
Military-style wool or canvas capes can be sourced and modified. Helldivers capes run shorter than most theatrical capes: roughly mid-back to waist length, not floor length. Trim a longer cape to proportion and hem the cut edge.
Option 2: Sew from scratch
A simple rounded rectangle, slightly tapered toward the bottom, in heavy canvas or linen. Olive green or khaki. Finished measurements roughly 50–60cm wide and 70–80cm long. Hem all edges and add a collar clasp or button at the neck.
Weathering the cape
- Tea-staining: Soak the finished cape in strong black tea for 20–30 minutes, wring gently, dry flat. Ages the fabric without obvious paint.
- Dry-brushing edges: Drag a very dry, dark brown brush along all edges and the bottom hem.
- Optional distressing: Light sanding with 60-grit sandpaper creates visible wear texture on cotton/canvas.
Backpack and Equipment
- Start with any dark green or black tactical backpack with MOLLE-style webbing
- Add printed details (ration boxes, ammo pouches, painted metallic hardware) to the exterior webbing
- Weather the bag to match the armor
- The backpack carries your convention essentials while looking like Helldiver field kit
Strapping the Armor
- Chest armor: N52 neodymium magnets embedded in the chest piece with corresponding plates on the fatigue top or a thin vest underneath.
- Shoulder armor: Magnets or velcro depending on piece weight. For heavier pieces, use two magnet pairs per shoulder for stability.
- Forearm gauntlets: Adjustable elastic webbing straps inside the gauntlet, secured with velcro or ITW Nexus buckles.
- Shin/knee guards: Dual-lock velcro on the front shins, worn over pants. Add foam padding to the interior to stop the piece from shifting.
For Democracy: Convention Posing
The Super-Earth salute (right fist raised over the chest) is the universal Helldivers pose. Practice it. It reads instantly in photos and pulls in every Helldivers fan in the room.
The cape weathering technique (tea-staining, edge dry-brushing) applies to any aged fabric element, including the Mandalorian Kama.
That’s the complete Helldivers build. Back to the Helldivers Build Guide overview or start a new series: Mandalorian or Halo ODST & Spartan.
