The Druj Method
3D Print Finishing Tutorial — By Druj · Rancor Clan · Mando Mercs
Overview
The Druj Method is a spray-primer and wet-sanding workflow for finishing FDM 3D-printed props and cosplay armor. It covers layer lines, adds structural rigidity, and produces a smooth, paint-ready surface — without fillers, resins, or power tools. Developed and refined by Druj within the Rancor Clan of the Mando Mercs.
Take a raw FDM print and get it to a finished, paint-ready prop as quickly and painlessly as possible.
Materials & Where to Buy
Everything below is available on Amazon. Total cost per prop in consumables is typically under $25.
| Product | ~Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rust-Oleum MultiColor Textured Paint 223524 · 12 oz Desert Bisque · Red nozzle | ~$11 | First coat. Creates a rough, bumpy base texture that builds surface mass over layer lines. Shake upside down before use. |
| Rust-Oleum 2-in-1 Filler & Sandable Primer 260510 · 12 oz Gray | ~$8 | Second coat. Applied over textured paint after a 15-minute flash. Both coats cure together for 24 hours. Hi-build formula fills remaining imperfections; sands smooth. |
| Wet/Dry Sandpaper Pack Assorted grits incl. 150, 600, 1200 | ~$10 | Multi-grit assortment pack. Use 150 dry, then 600 and 1200 wet. Silicon carbide preferred. |
| Wagner HomeRight Spray Shelter C900038 Large · or C900139 Medium | ~$40–80 | Pop-up spray tent. Contains overspray, keeps finish clean. Sets up in seconds; stores flat. |
| Nitrile Gloves MedPride · 100-pack · Powder-free | ~$11 | Keep primer and paint off your hands. Powder-free nitrile is chemical-resistant and won’t contaminate your finish. |
| 3M Paint Project Respirator 6211 · OV/P95 · Half facepiece | ~$20 | NIOSH-approved OV/P95 respirator for spray paint. Covers organic vapors from both coats plus sanding dust. |
These are two different Rust-Oleum products used in sequence — do not substitute one for the other. The MultiColor Textured paint (red nozzle) goes first and creates the bumpy base. The 2-in-1 Filler & Sandable Primer goes second and fills over it. Order matters.
Full Materials List
- Rust-Oleum MultiColor Textured Paint (Desert Bisque) — First coat; builds rough texture over layer lines (~$11/can)
- Rust-Oleum 2-in-1 Filler & Sandable Primer — Second coat; fills texture, sands smooth (~$8/can)
- 150-grit sandpaper — First dry sanding pass (can skip to 600)
- 600-grit wet/dry sandpaper — Main wet sanding pass
- 1200-grit wet/dry sandpaper — Optional final wet sand for max smoothness
- Wagner HomeRight Spray Shelter — Contains overspray; keeps finish clean
- Nitrile gloves (MedPride 100-pack) — Chemical-resistant; powder-free nitrile
- 3M 6211 Respirator (OV/P95) — NIOSH-approved; required for spray coats and sanding
Step-by-Step Process
Step 1 — Shake the Primer Can
Before spraying, turn the can upside down and shake vigorously for at least one minute. This is the most important and most commonly skipped step — filler primer settles fast and sprays unevenly if under-mixed.
Shake until the mixing ball moves freely and the product sounds consistent throughout the can.
Step 2 — Apply Rust-Oleum MultiColor Textured Paint
Set up inside the spray tent to contain overspray. Apply an even coat of Rust-Oleum MultiColor Textured Paint (Desert Bisque, red nozzle) over the entire print. This is not the primer — it’s a textured paint that builds a rough, bumpy surface mass over the layer lines, giving the filler primer something thick to key into. Hold the can 8–12 inches away, use sweeping motions, and cover all surfaces. Full coverage is the goal on this pass.
- Wear nitrile gloves and a respirator.
- Any-angle spray — the can can be tilted or inverted to reach recessed areas.
Step 3 — Wait 15 Minutes
Allow the textured paint to flash off for 15 minutes. This is not a full cure — just enough time for the surface to tack up before the filler primer goes on top.
Step 4 — Apply Rust-Oleum 2-in-1 Filler & Sandable Primer
Apply a coat of Rust-Oleum 2-in-1 Filler & Sandable Primer over the textured paint. This fills into the bumpy texture, smoothing the surface and building a sandable base. Both coats will cure together. This is the coat you will be sanding back in Step 5.
After the full 24-hour cure, the print will feel rigid and have a rough, grainy texture — almost like concrete. Layer lines should be largely buried. That’s what you want before sanding.
Both coats cure together — wait the full 24 hours after applying the primer before sanding. Rushing causes gumming instead of a clean cut.
Step 5 — Sand the Surface
The core smoothing phase. Sanding progression is flexible depending on your target finish quality and time available.
| Grit | Method | Purpose / Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 150 | Dry | Opens the primer surface; removes hard layer lines. Can skip if jumping straight to 600. |
| 600 | Wet | Main smoothing pass. Keeps dust down and gives a clean, consistent cut. |
| 1200 | Wet | Optional final polish before top coat. Use for near-glassy finish. |
Preferred workflow:
- 150-grit dry to knock down hard bumps and layer ridges.
- 600-grit wet for the main smoothing pass.
- 1200-grit wet for optional near-glassy finish.
If the filler primer filled well and a glassy finish isn’t needed, skip the 150 and jump straight to 600 wet sand.
Step 6 — Repeat if Needed
Inspect the surface after sanding. If deep layer lines or pits remain, apply another pass of textured paint, wait 15 minutes, apply filler primer, cure 24 hours, and re-sand. Repeat until you reach the finish quality you want. The number of passes depends on your print quality and target finish.
Expected Result
A smooth, uniform gray surface with no visible layer lines — harder and more rigid than raw PLA/PETG, ready for base coat and paint. Final smoothness is entirely within your control: more passes and higher grit equals a smoother surface.
Tips & Notes
- Always shake the can upside down — 1+ minute. Most commonly skipped step.
- Use a spray tent — overspray accumulates fast and dirties the finish.
- 15-minute flash between coats, then 24-hour cure for both together — don’t sand early.
- Keep sandpaper wet throughout the wet sand passes.
- Works on PLA, PETG, ABS, and ASA — all respond well to this process.
Quick Reference Checklist

- Apply full coverage coat of MultiColor Textured Paint (spray tent, gloves, respirator).
- Wait 15 minutes for textured paint to flash off.
- Apply Rust-Oleum 2-in-1 Filler & Sandable Primer over wet textured coat.
- Cure both coats together — 24 hours. Do not sand early.
- Sand: 150 dry → 600 wet → 1200 wet (or jump to 600).
- Inspect. Repeat primer + sand cycle if needed.
- Surface ready for base coat and paint.
