Choosing Your Fallout Power Armor Variant
Five major power armor models span the Fallout games and TV series. Each has a distinct visual identity, associated faction, and level of build complexity. Lock in your variant before sourcing files — the models are not interchangeable.
T-45: The Original
The T-45 is the earliest mass-produced power armor model, and the most rounded and organically shaped of the series. Its design draws on late-period Art Nouveau — curves everywhere, a distinctive rounded torso, a helmet with a softer profile than later models. The T-45 appears most prominently in Fallout 3 and Fallout 76.
The T-45 is the least commonly built model simply because the later variants have stronger visual recognition at conventions. If you want a build that stands out as different, the T-45 is a rewarding choice — but you’ll be explaining what it is more often.
T-51: Art Deco Steel
The T-51 is widely considered the most visually striking power armor design. Its lines are clean and angular in a 1950s Art Deco style — the helmet particularly is exceptional. The T-51 appears in Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Fallout 4. Associated with the pre-war US military and scavengers, not a specific faction.
The T-51’s clean geometry makes it one of the more demanding finishing builds — those flat, clean surfaces require good surface prep. The payoff is a build that photographs extremely well.
T-60: Brotherhood of Steel
The T-60 is the Brotherhood of Steel’s primary armor in Fallout 4, and the armor prominently featured in the 2024 Amazon TV series. It’s more angular and modern than the T-45/T-51, with Brotherhood-specific detailing. The TV show gave it additional media exposure that the games alone hadn’t — it’s now the first variant most people picture when they hear “Fallout Power Armor.”
Game vs. TV show differences
The TV show’s Brotherhood T-60 has some design departures from the in-game model — different proportions, modified helmet details, different joint treatment. If you want to match the show exactly, use screencaps from the show as reference. If game accuracy matters more, use in-game assets. Both are valid targets; just be consistent within your build.
X-01: Enclave Advanced Power Armor
The X-01 is the end-game power armor in Fallout 4 — the most advanced design in the series. Sleek, angular, and threatening. Associated with the Enclave (the remnant US government) and Institute. The distinctive helmet with its multiple visor slots and the clean-line torso make it one of the most visually distinct builds.
The X-01 is the most technically demanding of the common variants — the geometry is more complex and requires careful seam placement in the file splits.
Excavator: Appalachian Industry
The Excavator armor from Fallout 76 is a mining-modified variant with industrial attachments — drill bits, reinforced plating, Hornwright Industrial branding. Unusual and extremely distinctive. Rarely built, which makes it an attention-getter at conventions for people who recognize it.
Faction Association and Customization
Power armor in Fallout is often personalized. Deciding on your faction or character concept before building affects your paint scheme, weathering approach, and any insignia or decals:
- Brotherhood of Steel: Steel grey or silver base with Brotherhood sigil, clean(ish) maintenance-level wear
- Enclave: Dark grey or black with Enclave eagle insignia, military-precise condition
- Raider/Lone Wanderer: Heavy weathering, improvised repairs, mixed-color patchwork — the most creative builds come from here
- Character build (TV show Maximus, Fallout 4 protagonist): Match the specific reference as closely as possible
